Chicago doesn’t need something fancy to address crime. It needs good policing and to arrest, prosecute, convict and sentence. – Wirepoints on AM 560 Chicago’s Morning Answer
Ted was on with Dan and Amy to talk about Chicago’s explosive rise in crime, the continued failure of prosecutors like Kim Foxx and the twists and turns of the Jenny Thornley affair.
Could @Wirepoints tell me where 6th Congressional District #IL06 candidate @KeithPekau is finding his statistics about exploding #crime in northeastern #Illinois? I consulted the Illinois State Police Uniform Crime Reports https://isp.illinois.gov/CrimeReporting/CrimeInIllinoisReports . Here’s what I found: Contrary to Keith’s contention, crime has NOT been increasing but decreasing! From 2015-2020, the crime rate fell by 10% in Cook County outside of Chicago, 17% in Chicago, and 18% in Illinois outside of Cook County, as can be seen on this Twitter graph https://bit.ly/ILcrimes . It’s Republican’s right to campaign against Dems like @SeanCasten @RepCasten. But it doesn’t help their case, either practically or ethically, if… Read more »
I would love to see the 2021 and partial 2022 results also. Neither has yet been available in the ISP Uniform Crime Reports that I cited in my note above. Since neither @Wirepoints or @KeityPekau has responded about where they get their data, I doubt they have a credible source. So they have no business screaming crime explosion with nothing but their hopes to back it up. I was able to get the 2021 results by going directly to the police departments in the two biggest cities in the 6th District — Orland Park and Palatine (and you can too).… Read more »
There are two types of index crimes: Index vs. Person & Index Crimes vs. Property. You’ve combined both Property crimes and Violent crimes in your graph.
The index crimes are higher because more THEFTs were reported during 2015-2019. That is where there is a steep drop off. Also, was 2019 the year where felony theft was no longer going to be prosecuted under $1,000?
Now, can you reproduce your graph showing Violent Index Crimes?
2016 and 2017 will show that they were highly violent years. 2019 was low and Chicago has been. On an upward/downward trend since the pandemic.
Intelligent and knowledgeable response, Jockey! As you request, I have reproduced my graph showing only Violent Index Crimes. No explosions as @wirepoints & @KeithPekau claim. In fact, no changes between 2015-2020, with 2020 being the last year with published UCR data. https://twitter.com/DaroldBarnum/status/1555308593880207360.
