Said Drew Gronewold, an associate professor at the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability, “I would argue that the economy of the Midwest depends entirely on water. We really need to be paying more attention to the future of this area and, in particular, how we’re going to improve the infrastructure to handle these changes.”

Lake Michigan water-elevation is actually significantly lower this year from last, and determined largely by snow-melt run-off conditions, year-to-year and dam diversions on Lake Superior. Several years ago, Lake Michigan water-elevation was at historic low, exposing long expanses of sand beach in areas formerly wet basin. And yet, older folks will remember when Lincoln Park lagoon water-elevation exceeded basin, year-after-year, before that period of 2003 – 2017 low water elevations.
But Mr. Wanna-Be Expert says Chicago now faces climate change risk.

Since I was a kid, that’s a long time ago, I remember riding my bike to the lakefront and riding along the lake to Oak St beach. At Diversey the large telephone pile like pilings ran about a couple of hundred feet out along the “rocks”. Some years you could barely see them as they were almost under water, other years the tops of the poles were 10ft clear of the water surface. Growing up and driving down Lake Shore Dr, yes that’s the name of the roadway, I remember seeing the same thing for years. Water was high, water… Read more »

The title should be “Chicago builds on swamp next to melted glacier, not prepared as water level naturally rises” Chicago is built on a swamp, in the middle of a continent with no mountains to buffer the weather, and we expect wild temperature swings in an average year from -10 in January to 90 degrees in July. Did they really expect a 300′ deep lake wouldn’t fluctuation a little over the years? They blame “climate change” instead of man’s stupidity? Those rolling hills in Barrington and Palos got there because.. yes, you guessed it…the GLACIERS grew and receded over thousands… Read more »

Now we have two ways for homes and office buildings to be under water. Whaddya gonna tax? Won’t work; we’ll have to “float” a bond issue. Or, as a last resort, perhaps we can get a “bailout.”
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
