“Guzzardi, who is a Chicago Democrat, says if Illinois taxed wealthy people and profitable corporations at higher rates the state could bring in enough money to do this, while also erasing the deficit.”

Comment: He formerly was an editor for Huffington Post Chicago and went to Brown University. Go figure.

What are the enrollment projections if each public university and community college were free? Can current state facilities handle the increased enrollment for something that is essentially given away now? Will upper-tier public schools like UIUC decrease their reliance on out-of-state and foreign students to fill their classrooms and what’s that corresponding financial impact? And what of the private colleges that would see a sharp decrease in enrollment now that their competition is free? Don’t forget the kids who have no intention of going to college.
