I just read that JB signed SB 1226 into law which abolishes the Illinois State Charter School Commission on July1,2020 and transfers it’s responsibilities to the State Board of Education. Also the State Board of Education can levy a fee of 3% to cover the cost overseeing the schools. Question. Is this the beginning of the end for charter schools? There are about 121 charter schools in Chicago. This seems like local school districts have now more power over charter schools. There is more info at Chalkbeat and WBEZ. I really feel bad for the kids whose parents have little or… Read more »

Honestly I don’t feel bad for these parents/kids at all. During the last strike the kids were holding signs essentially saying to “pay the teachers” and give them everything they wanted. Rahm tried to hold out, knowing full well the financial calamity that would ensue. He ultimately lost because nobody had his back, and that includes the thousands of dim bulb parents who seem to be nothing more than useful idiots. They are out there “in solidarity” with a group of people who are looking to fleece taxpayers more and more, while those same taxpayers increasingly can’t afford basic expenses… Read more »

It’s kind of sad that teachers use kids as pawns. Not sure if the kids holding signs are all teachers kids but they are there to pull at our heartstrings. Remember we are always told it’s about the kids yeah right! If and when a strike occurs the school board are the ones who hear from parents at all hours to settle because they have to take off of work to find sitters and everyone knows the schools are the sitters from K-12. That’s what we taxpayers are forced to pay at about $15K or more per student. Here in… Read more »

I just want to see the CTU and CPS crash and burn. While I do feel sympathy for the children who are caught in the middle, I feel no sympathy for their moronic parents who encourage this ridiculous behavior by allowing their children to attend CPS in the first place.

I’m rooting for a strike. Because of the entertainment value of watching a woke union and a woke mayor either cannibalize each other, or more likely collude a bargain to cannibalize dumb residents and make them think they got a good deal and like it. The mayor and the CTU are two wolves discussing what to have for lunch, the taxpayer is the sheep. At least a strike makes it look like the mayor stood up to CTU.

Lightfoot picked an awful time to be a progressive mayor. There is no money. There is no choice but to raise property taxes – and quite substantially. The CTU does not care; they look at assets owned by others the way a wolf looks at a helpless sheep. They feel entitled to it, and once having eaten one, they will be entitled to the entire herd. The worst part of it all is that enrollment will continue to decline, likely significantly. And as dismal as it sounds, outcomes will get worse. It is useless to argue with Marxists – one… Read more »

Number of half-empty Chicago public schools doubles, yet lawmakers want to extend school closing moratorium – Wirepoints

A set of state lawmakers want to extend CPS’ current school closing moratorium to February 1, 2027 – the same year CPS is set to transition to a fully-elected school board. That means schools like Manley High School, with capacity for more than 1,000 students but enrollment of just 78, can’t be closed for anther three years. The school spends $45,000 per student, but just 2.4% of students read at grade level.
