Increasingly, Illinois lawmakers are opting not to participate in the state pension system, a trend some see as a realization of the bleak outlook for the system but that others view as a political ploy.
“Sure, some of them are doing it for political purposes,” said Bob Williams, president of State Budget Solutions. “But many of them view this as a leadership issue. Defined benefit pensions are not sustainable over the long haul. States need to move away from them, and some legislators are choosing to lead by example.”
