Mayor Brandon Johnson campaigned on ending the ShotSpotter contract and did so last year, but only after he extended it twice. In announcing the Request for Information process ahead of ShotSpotter’s phase-out in September, the mayor said the city has to “explore better options that save more lives.”
Sounds like an effort to replace Shotspotter with a similar technology of a different brand name so that the mayor can claim he fulfilled a campaign promise specific to Shotspotter while then signing a contract with a company owned by people with connections to Johnson. Meanwhile, he continues to reduce police staffing. A lot of political theater at the expense of public safety.
