Implementing a mileage based VMT without GPS tracking would be a nightmare. When they check your odometer how would they know what miles were driven in Illinois vs outside the taxable area? And GPS tracking your car has privacy issues. Do they require everyone to have an I pass and install scanners on all roads? Big brother. Progressive tree huggers wanted electric cars and they want to tax gas too, too bad.

How about I register my car in Michigan? Is that a possible way to avoid this VMT? I’m not even 1% interested in paying more taxes. Thank you.

Illinois gets fewer miles of roads per dollar due to having to use prevailing wage contractors. Instead of raising the tax, just redo the prevailing wage rule, that will effectively increase the infrastructure deliverables at current tax rates. Kentucky, Wisconsin, Tennessee all get more work done than us per road dollar. it’s about managing by deliverable and the cost of each, not about just shoveling more money into the pit.

Soon Illinois will confiscate all our assets and give us a small stipend to live on. Maybe? They are already holding our homes hostage!

Would the vehicle mileage tax be subject to the new constitutional amendment forcing it to be used for roads? If not, is this just another boondoggle to get more tax money into the general fund for pensions?

Ugh. A VMT tax in place of the current system sounds like another way to squeeze more money from IL residents. Does he have any ideas that will give money back to IL residents? Also, someone needs to tell these politicians that enough is enough as far as going after IL residents for yet more money. The top priority by far for IL pols should be to reform the pension and benefits systems in place. That would be a massive savings for the IL taxpayer. With that reform, the IL pols wouldn’t need to come up with more and more… Read more »
