This summer, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced that the state would provide $500 million to establish the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park at the former U.S. Steel South Works plant, a site that has sat vacant since closing more than 30 years ago. PsiQuantum hopes to break ground in early 2025; One of the first jobs would be for the state to fund, out of its $500 million commitment, a $200 million cryogenic plant to create liquid helium to cool the computer to nearly absolute zero, deep space conditions.
Pritzker is a socialist, thinking he can micromanage the Illinois economy by throwing fed and state dollars at preferred industries. Ask him why doesnt he just give a tax holiday to any quantum businesswho set up shop? Because its success then would destroy his belief in socialism. As a person with intimate knowledge of Illinois economic development, I unfortunately give it about a 10-20 % of succeeding, with a 100 % chance of the taxpayers getting hosed, again.

While quantum computing is the future it is still an unproven and untested technology more in the theoretical realm. The state of IL has no business risking our scarce tax dollars on an extremely risky tech bet. If psiquantum and the state want to enter this gamble them make the states’ pension funds take the likely losses risk free to the tax payers. If they hit a big win then apply it to the debt. Remember folks, if this was a financially feasible endeavor private capital would have already done it. Hundreds of billions, maybe trillions have been invested in… Read more »
Which will be completed first, on schedule and under budget? The Microelectronics park or the new Bears stadium near Soldier Field? you make the call! Oh, let’s throw in the Red Line extension to Sauk Village into the mix.
