The Digital Asset Tax Act, signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker as part of a $55.9 billion budget package, makes Illinois the first U.S. state to impose a transaction-level tax on crypto activity.

Chicago’s place and legacy as a financial center died decades ago. It is a second tier regional hub at best.

Chicago is not a leading financial services industry like it once was and not sure there is much of a legacy left. Northern Trust is one of the few still standing. American National, Harris Bank, Continental, LaSalle Bank, First Chicago – all gone. There are good, smaller banks that still invest in communities, but it seems at some point the money is too good to pass up and the board of directors/shareholders start to consider selling out.
