It’s rare to see city leaders in Chicago take an open, unabashed stance on the collapse of literacy. To complain is deemed as too political, too racist or too anti-public schools. So it’s refreshing to see Willie Wilson, a successful businessman and leader of the black community, call for a literacy initiative “with the goal of getting 100% of Black students reading at grade level.”

When UPS negotiates with the teamsters over a new contract in 5 years the package delivery landscape may be totally different. The UAW used to ride roughshod over the Big 3 automakers until nonunion foreign transplants came into the car market. The financial crisis of 2008 pretty much ended the UAW’s monopoly power over the Big 3 and we’ll see if Amazon has a like effect over the teamsters at UPS.
