Wirepoints’ Mark Glennon on AM560: Why We Need to “Relentlessly” Make the Blue State-Red State Case
Glennon raised the stakes of the moment in broader civilizational terms: “This election in Illinois is not about the usual pedestrian issues… it’s about nothing less than whether Western civilization survives in our democratic republic of America because [the left], just on the open border alone, will destroy the country, and now they’re bringing in the jihadists, frankly, into the party.” Audio and summary linked here.Audio and summary linked here.
New Trier High School made national headlines nine years ago as a “canary in a coal mine” for political indoctrination in public schools. The canaries lived.
Among the consequences of economic growth that badly lags national averages are billions of lost revenue every year. Yet denial reigns in Illinois, fueling the vicious cycle of demand for higher taxes.
Police catch poc committing crimes- Bad! Spot Shotter recording poc shooting at each other- Bad! Flock catching poc criminals driving to or from their latest caper- Bad! If all of the above were nabbing whitey left and right, you wouldn’t hear a peep about it.
Here is the ultimate problem for Flock and other similar companies. Their legal justification under the Constitution relies on the idea that their cameras only produce fragments of information. Weitzel depicts Flock as simply “a technology that photographs license plates in public places”, instead of a mass surveillance system. In other words, something the average citizen might video or photograph in a public area. Mr. Weitzel, if you take the oath of office and put on a badge, you are no longer an average citizen, and you are going to be held to a higher standard, by law and the… Read more »
AI?
In my experience, AI is a joke, and lies or makes mistakes too much. I don’t use it. All one needs to do is find someone smarter than they are.
For example, go ask AI if the Covid shots are safe and effective.
Agreed, Frank. You are right to not rely on its answers. I do think, however, that it is now incredibly valuable as a research tool. Give it the right prompts from a number of angles and it turns up amazing things. It’s just that, as you say, it does make mistakes, so you need to check it, and it too often asserts clear answers on things are are at least debatable.
Will the next step be then car repo companies can get the data and what about landlords chasing rent skippers? The power here is limitless particularly for an old person like me that was forced to read “1984” and “Animal Farm” in the 8th grade supplemented by nuns from the Soviet controlled Eastern European nations.
One of the best comments on this site. Thoroughly researched and well written. I wish more comments on Wirepoints were like this one.
Personally I would suggest, if crime reduction is really the goal, scrapping the safe-t-act would be a better use of resources and then maybe the cameras would not be needed.
I still have my paperback editions of Animal Farm and 1984. I should revisit both of those books.
Chief Weitzel cites a number of cases where ALPR’s helped solve crimes. So are we seeing crime rates decline in areas where ALPR’s are deployed? What about ALPR-free areas?
There does seem to be an organized, well funded effort against these cameras. Lots of misinformation. By who? Soros? China? DSA? A Flock competitor? There are multiple brands of ALPRs. The chief’s observation that opposition is largely based in anti police sentiments likely to be accurate. Any technology – AI, my god! – must be managed,, regulated and abuse penalized. That’s what should be done with ALPRs rather than throwing the baby out with the bathwater. As for the concerns with these being Big Brother, are we to get rid of cell phones which track your location, internet usage, your… Read more »
Today, Flock cameras catch criminals. Tomorrow, with Democrats in charge, Flock cameras will be used to send you tickets via email for not wearing a mask in your car 10 town back, or worse, arrest you as a terrorist for attending a school board meeting. The problem is that Flock cameras will eventually become the architecture for tyrannical governments.
You’re wrong. This is a tool of a surveillance state and not in the spirit of what has made our country great. Our country is founded and built on trust, liberty, and an intricate system of checks and balances. There’s no need for micro policing in a free society and no mention of it in the constitution. I’m glad many are speaking out about major encroachments that prevent further power consolidation. We’re living in a world where the capital allocation classes can manipulate markets and profit with impunity; even worse, they use the ill gotten cash to foment social unrest… Read more »
If you are talking about how the billionaire George Soros has funded the campaigns of numerous state attorneys who have systematically destroyed cities and increased crime in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago then you are right about that. But if the problem is reducing crime, AND IT IS, then Flock is no worse than having security cameras on every home and business.
Paid endorsement article. ALPR companies getting desperate to protect their golden goose.
No way. That author, Tom Weitzel, is the real thing with an amazing story behind him that you can easily find.
“who watches the watchmen?”
of course the author is a former cop-without the flock camera system how can police be expected to stalk women? if you think this is a joke, just google the terms “police flock stalking” and there are dozens and dozens of cases of this and they are only the tip of the iceberg as there are doubtless many more which have never been discovered
What a sleazy, cop-hating generalization to make.
just a reminder that facts don’t care about your feelings Mark. i don’t hate all cops, just the bad ones who believe they are above the very laws they have sworn to uphold. so just to be clear, it is your opinion that it’s not sleazy to stalk women using flock camera’s but it is sleazy to call out the many police who have been caught doing so? do the google search i suggested and you will see that these cases are not merely isolated incidents.
“It is your opinion that it’s not sleazy to stalk women….” I really wish we could find commenters from the left who are at least serious. You are an unserious person.
Cops using this to stalk women or men should bring about jail time, but it never will as they will always cover up for each other. The constitution is supposed to protect the citizens from such a thing. And yes, it has happened and likely will happen again.
