Last year, 296 towns imposed a sales tax on top of the state’s 6.25 percent. And elected officials in 173 of those towns have the authority to raise sales tax rates without asking voters for permission (“home-rule” powers). Chicago Public Schools seeking to borrow up to $700 million – Chicago Tribune

Chicago Board of Education members are expected to vote on a measure providing for up to $300 million in bonds for recent projects and about $400 million more to restructure existing loans.
