The bill would have required large commercial property owners in the county to disclose income and expenses so his office could use the data to improve accuracy of the valuations on which property taxes are based. Other Illinois counties would have been allowed to adopt the same requirements.

But the plan ran into strong opposition from business interests, trade unions and the owners of large downtown Chicago buildings.

Lightfoot opposes legislation to help McCormick Place – Chicago Sun-Times

“The mayor is committed to ensuring that Chicago’s convention industry remains vibrant, and supports making investments that will enhance McCormick Place and drive new economic growth for the City of Chicago,” the statement read. “However we are concerned about this proposal in its current form, specifically the exemption favoring large venue owners, whose customer base includes visitors and conventioneers, and the potential unintended consequences for small businesses in Chicago.”
