“When they’re (the schools) going through the budgeting process right now, they’re also going through their levy process,” State Rep. Avery Bourne, R-Raymond, said. “This also forces upward pressure on property taxes, which is something the governor has said he wants to alleviate, but creating this kind of uncertainty does the opposite.”
Nearly identical to one served last week on Merrionette Park, federal prosecutors served the village of Bridgeview with a subpoena looking for records on a consultant with deep ties to Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan. That investigation is examining, at least in part, if Madigan put the arm on ComEd — which the Legislature helps regulate — to hire certain lobbyists who then allegedly did little or no work.
According to the lawsuit filed in Cook County circuit court, James T. Weiss and his parking business stopped paying CPS last April for the right to park cars at three schools closest to Wrigley Field — but kept charging customers to park there anyway. Weiss is husband to former state Rep. Maria “Toni” Berrios and son-in-law to former Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios.
New property assessments are coming to the city in 2021, which could push up property taxes to an estimated $5,000 to $6,000 per unit. Just a few years ago, developers were figuring in $3,500 in per unit in taxes on new projects.
