Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration has not moved to terminate a single police officer for failing to comply with the order in the more than two months since the final deadline passed. Of the city’s total workforce of 31,101 employees, 8.3% do not have to be vaccinated against COVID-19, with 67 exemption requests still pending.

“Our decision was based on several factors, including repeated burglaries and declining sales,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “Out of concern for our employees and customers, keeping this store open was no longer a sustainable option.”

Facing a citizen-initiated referendum campaign from a group called the Skokie Alliance for Electoral Reform, Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen placed on Monday’s village board agenda a trio of resolutions calling for three nonbinding advisory questions to appear on the November ballot. The Alliance’s proposals include: staggered elections, a mix of at-large and district-level village trustees and, in perhaps the biggest threat to the Skokie Caucus Party’s six-decade rule of the village board, nonpartisan elections.

Officers from the Lakeview-based Town Hall District sounded overwhelmed and understaffed as they called for more cars and twice declared “10-1” police emergencies on the 3300 block of North Halsted between 2:45 a.m. and 3 a.m. “We got about 75 people going crazy out here.”

A City Council subcommittee was created two years ago to examine how the city could pay reparations to descendants of enslaved African Americans. But since then, it’s met only twice.

A spokesperson for the school said “the University of Chicago that exists today was founded in 1890. The earlier university was founded by (former Illinois Senator Stephen A.) Douglas in 1856 and financially collapsed in 1886, with no endowment and its land and buildings foreclosed by creditors.”

“These are low wage workers throughout the city of Chicago. And rather than focus on the employers in the city, we focus on the worker,” said Andy Fox, director of labor standards for the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection.

Five people were wounded in a single attack Friday evening in the Douglas area on the South Side. They were standing in a parking lot in the 3000-block of South Rhodes Avenue when a gunman opened fire at 11:45 p.m., police said.
