The new entertainment unit comes after a newly formed neighborhood group in Fulton Market announced plans to hire private security for the area. A section of Division Street and other parts of Ukrainian Village experienced high-profile shootings and public safety issues this winter.

Chicago Housing Authority CEO Tracy Scott says because most of the CHA’s funds come from federal sources, the regulations specify they cannot be used for people who don’t qualify for such money. But Scott said the CHA has been indirectly helping by providing money to other agencies and organizations that help the homeless.

Although Chicago will still see an increase in state education funding, a drop in the percentage of students considered low-income and a bump in property wealth in the city means the district is not getting the largest share of the new money.

There were 103 overdose deaths attributable to fentanyl in Cook County in 2015. That number shot up to 1,533 in 2020 and a record 1,825 in 2022, according to statistics from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. That accounts for more than 90% of all opioid-related deaths in the county.

Some of the most impacted subjects are those requiring extra education, like science, math, special education and bilingual classrooms.

“Only 180 Chicago public schools used their space efficiently in the 2022-2023 school year while 290 schools were underutilized and 25 schools were overcrowded…Schools and students in the district are suffering, but the Chicago Teachers Union doesn’t want anything to change.”

Wednesday’s spree involved one or two carloads of robbers who jumped out to mug people on the street, often while victims stood outside bars and other late-night businesses. The same scenario has played out hundreds of times in recent months and weeks as Chicago police have failed to get a handle on the robbery surge.

Chris Deng, a 2023 Walter Payton College Prep graduate, studied internet speeds at high schools on the West Side, North Side and central city. Every school studied met a federal short-term goal to provide speeds of 100 kilobits per second for every person at the school. But only 13 percent of tests run at the schools met the federal long-term benchmark, which is 1 megabit per second for every person in the school. None of the tests met a national tech directors association’s goal for large districts like Chicago Public Schools, which is 1.4 megabits per second per person.

Professor Terrell Morton is an “Identity and Justice in STEM Education” scholar who “draws from critical race theory, phenomenology, and human development to ascertain Black students’ consciousness and how it manifests in their various embodiments and actions that facilitate their STEM postsecondary engagements,” according to his faculty bio.

While Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s most recent budget projected a surplus, the plaintiffs in the case argue that the figures were achieved on the backs of the transportation funds, which they say are being used for projects at the Cook County Jail, Juvenile Detention Center, and in the Social Services Department. Cook County officials argued that they had the right to “pay for expenses related to enforcing vehicular laws and road safety beyond filling potholes.”
