Keeven, a Troy City Administrator and former Edwardsville Police Chief, announced April 15 that he would challenge incumbent Democratic State Rep. Katie Stuart in the 112th District. “I got my petition filed before the Senate passed that bill and the governor signed it, so I am on the ballot,” Keeven said. “They can’t make a law that goes retroactive.”

“What is the impact of taking attention and resources away from the Park District and local parks? … Where are the details? There’s a lot of, ‘Just trust me’ going on,” said Gin Kilgore, of Friends of the Parks.
“Protest is a strongly protected form of speech in the UChicago culture, and the demonstrators had multiple opportunities to express their views,” university President Paul Alivisatos said. “But many aspects of the protests also interfered with the free expression, learning, and work of others. Safety concerns have mounted over the last few days, and the risks were increasing too rapidly for the status quo to hold.”

It’s rare to see city leaders in Chicago take an open, unabashed stance on the collapse of literacy. To complain is deemed as too political, too racist or too anti-public schools. So it’s refreshing to see Willie Wilson, a successful businessman and leader of the black community, call for a literacy initiative “with the goal of getting 100% of Black students reading at grade level.”
Student protesters linked arms in a standoff with U of C police dressed in riot gear around 5 a.m. outside the encampment, which was installed over a week ago. Cook County Sheriff’s officers were also seen at the encampment.
