Members of the Illinois delegation to the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago are being urged by the state party to “hold back from reacting publicly” as top Democrats scramble to either rally around the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris or hold a competitive primary.

One state Democratic source, said they were told Pritzker would issue a statement about his political future on Monday and that they expected the second-term Illinois governor “would be running for something.”

“If the party eschewed Biden’s endorsement of Harris or anointed Pritzker as the vice presidential nominee, Pritzker could offer certain advantages. Democrats would have a potential nominee with a proven track record in Illinois that closely aligns with the national party’s priorities.”

Democrats in the two contested state legislative races in East Central Illinois enjoy large fundraising advantages over their GOP opponents less than four months before Election Day.

“Listen, I love this party because sometimes we air our dirty laundry with one another and it gets into the press of these fine people,” the new Illinois Republican chair added, referring to reporters in the room. “But we need to say, ‘You know, let’s give that person the benefit of a new fresh day.’ And that’s how we will win elections here in Illinois.”
