Gov. JB Pritzker encouraged districts to inform undocumented students of their rights. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has provided guidance to school districts on handling potential immigration enforcement actions, encouraging the establishment of protocols and training for staff.
Teachers union members are distributing “defend your rights” materials to students and families at schools across the entire city. They were joined by Mayor Brandon Johnson, interim CPS CEO Macquline King and members of the Board of Education “As the city of Chicago, we’re going to stand firm in our values. We’re not gonna turn back the hands of time to a place in which federal troops and/or (the) National Guard prevents children from being educated,” Johnson said.
After touring the Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago on Friday, U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth said they gained some clarity but are still largely in the dark on details of President Donald Trump’s plan to use the base for an immigration roundup over the next month.
