A CPS spokesperson said the district is “considering all legal options” regarding the magnet school money. Mayor Brandon Johnson said earlier this year that he would take the Trump administration to court if it took federal funding away from CPS because of the district’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

Over 1-in-3 desks were already empty in CPS last school year, with many schools much emptier – including a high school built for 900 students that contained only 28. The new enrollment declines mean even more empty seats and near-empty school buildings at higher costs per student.

“The Chicago Teachers Union doesn’t merely bargain for pensions; it builds political power, shapes personnel, and steers policy. And what kind of politics does that machine promote? Look at the messaging. Look at the leadership. Look at who they choose to honor.”

In a statement Monday, the Chicago Headline Club — the nation’s largest chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists — said it was aware of several incidents of reporters being shot intentionally with bean bags, chemical munitions and the detention of Chicago journalist Steve Held as he filmed an arrest during a protest Saturday night. He was released without charges.
