Associate Professor Eman Abdelhadi of the University of Chicago’s Department of Comparative Human Development said in the days before her arrest, “There’s no center left. You’re either resisting or you’re complicit.”

“Chicagoans are not naïve. They know there are no easy answers to solve this challenge. Level with voters. Tell residents the truth about the hard choices ahead — because they already know. As our poll shows, they respect leaders who level with them.”

“We’re not going to be intimidated in Chicago,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said. “It’s my responsibility to stand up to tyranny and to make sure that we are defending the people of this city.”

“If we’re working to make sure that we’re keeping the peace, this has nothing to do with immigration,” Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said. “When you plow into a vehicle that contains law enforcement agents, you’re using deadly force and they can use deadly force in response to stop you.”

The assessment said at least four Chicago-area ICE facilities, including Broadview, have been surveilled with detailed layouts, diagrams and photos posted to what is described as an anarchist website. Also found on the website were photos of ICE agents, including names, faces and badge numbers.

Said Mayor Katrina Thompson, “I have repeatedly said that I intend to defend the protesters’ constitutionally protected free speech rights. I support their cause. But the repeated clashes with ICE agents in our town are causing enormous disruptions in the quality of life for my residents whose rights I have taken an oath to protect. We live here. Our residents live here and deserve dignity and respect.”

Ald. Rossana Rodriguez, whose ward includes Albany Park, said she closed her office early Wednesday so that she and staff could help monitor school dismissal. Her office and community organizers were able to gather 50 people in about two hours who would help “notify the community” in case ICE agents showed up, she said.

Chicago building inspectors visited the property at 7500 South South Shore Drive just two weeks before the raid, underscoring that officials were aware that people, including children, were living in unsafe and unhealthful conditions in a building plagued by illegal activity.

“The recent resolution apologizing for slavery in the City Council, alongside Mayor Brandon Johnson’s so-called “reparations” initiatives, are little more than divisive distractions from the real harm the mayor and his progressive allies are inflicting on Chicago’s Black community.”

“Our school parking lots are not for ICE to load their weapons. They are for Chicago, who drop their kids off to learn,” Johnson said. “Our libraries are not for ICE to prepare for a raid. They’re for Chicagoans to read and relax. Our Parks are not for ICE to set up checkpoints. They’re for Chicagoans to play and enjoy.”

“Illinois, like New York, is well known to promote race- and sex-based contracting and other racial preferences as a public policy,” according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Transportation. “These critical reviews are intended to ensure no additional federal dollars go towards discriminatory, illegal and wasteful contracting practices. The American people don’t care what race or gender construction workers, pipefitters, or electricians are. They just want these massive projects finally built quickly and efficiently.”

The village alleged that the Department of Homeland Security is engaging in a “continuous illegal occupation of Village property,” citing the construction of an eight-foot metal fence. Officials allege the padlocked fence blocks access to any property that happens to be located to the south, including industrial buildings that house private businesses.

“Chicago’s elected officials have a First Amendment right to document ICE’s actions and to inform their constituents of their rights without federal interference,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement upon hearing of the incident. “Any attempt to block this work is a direct attack on democratic accountability and an assault on the rights of the people of Chicago.”

The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago and the Civic Federation highlighted the progress that the city has made in fighting crime and argued that the Trump administration’s posture toward the city is undercutting public safety — and hurting business.

The ages of the victims range from 16 to 62, according to police.
