Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Doesn’t really matter who they put in that position – its all the same. The Education business at that level is theatre. The money will be too high. The action will be too little. There will be no right sizing, elimination of unused buildings, reduction in staff, etc… The graft and corruption will be in full swing, the only difference is that the salary will be gigantic and the golden parachute will produce another millionaire.
