Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. One big consequence here is that Americans will get still more divided. The red gets redder and the blue gets bluer. They will implement policies accordingly, feeding the process still further. It’s primarily the result of plainly obvious suicidal policies of the far left, so it’s great to see them suffer the consequences, but more division is the downside.
That’s the great thing about this country. You can live where you want, but you have to abide by the new political and social consequences. Some of that means you’ll discover enduring unanticipated disappointments. Shanghai-La may be out there, but finding it won’t be easy.
Our federalist system is party of the genius of our Founders.
To me that’s the case. One man’s dream place of residence can be another’s hell hole. Vive la difference!
Federalism is one of the greatest concepts of the Founding Fathers, but I fear it’s slowly disappearing with the power of the presidency becoming more omnipotent.
While I totally agree red states are getting redder and blue states are getting bluer, we are a 50-50 nation politically and that’s represented by the makeup of the federal legislature: 53-47 in the Senate and basically 50-50 in the House. The downside is that less than 10% of House seats are in competitive districts and only 3 states have a senator from each party. This means a lot of voters are not directly represented in our federal legislature. At the presidential level we basically do pendulum elections. We don’t like to give presidents a “third” term (last time that… Read more »
Yes, the red will get redder and the blue will get bluer. But, this can’t go on forever. There will come a point…..two points actually, when the difference in the two populations will go beyond just words. One point, perhaps the first to come, when the blue states’ disastrous economic policies will produce widespread bankruptcy and they will be looking for a bailout from the prosperous red states. Hopefully, as I expect, the red states will say NO! The next point will come when, God forbid, the leftists get in power in the federal government to the extent that they… Read more »
The blue states are essentially doing that to Trump and his minions already in case you haven’t noticed. It’s the same concept played in reverse.
Cook county needs to represent all residents, not just Chicago, illegals, criminals, far left , and suburban residents.
that train left the station
Very interesting observation. It would be more interesting to find out why those people migrated there.
Every utterance that escapes JB the Hutt’s and the rest of Illinois political animal lips is reason enough to escape Illinois for a saner and prudently run state. Do we need more…? Every tax hike. Every new tax. Every property tax bill. Every gerrymandered district in Illinois. Every illegal immigrant protected in their defiance of Federal Immigration law by Illinois political animals. Every stacked six figure ‘public servant’ pension paid with confiscated taxpayer funds. Every anti-American NGO funded with confiscated taxpayer dollars. Every sermon on behalf of the Religion of Climate. Every ‘teen takeover’ that gets excused by Mayor Cliff… Read more »
Personally I have a lot of reasons for looking out of State but the one that is going to break the camel’s back is the inheritance tax. I should add to that sooner or later we are going to get the so called “fair tax” which is another issue as well. My wife and I saved while giving up a lot of things over our lifetimes and now we find we have to give a chunk to the Chicago political system to p penalize us? I think not and those two alone are reason enough.
Unfortunately, shifting voters within states does not a red state make. I’m sure the people I see fleeing the ruinous IL Dem policies that they voted for are voting for more of the same no matter where they land.
That happened in Colorado. Influx of Californians brought CA voting habits to a once-sensible state.
