Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Chicago had 10 murders and 31 wounded memorial weekend. I don’t know if any of these violent crimes were committed by someone released from prison due to the virus. I also don’t know if denying basic rights, like the right to protest, causes anger to be demonstrated in more violent ways.

You’d think our data-driven mayor and governor would keep track of crimes committed by those they release. That’s the statistic we need to judge the effectiveness of their program to release criminals
