Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. How does this help diversity? It rewards a chosen few based on their skin color. It incentivizes the chosen few to remain just that – a few. Moreover, the narrative she relates to these reporters is likely going to be so lacking in substance the excluded journalists won’t be missing out on much – again – no incentive to diversify. Lightfoot is pandering to identity groups, hardly unusual when it comes to politics but typically panderers are not so brazen.
