Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
It should not be the government’s job to mandate or encourage the use or purchase of any product or service. Hence, neither the state of Illinois nor the federal government should encourage or mandate the use of electric cars. Sadly, that’s not the case. Massachusetts and California have outlawed the sale of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in 2035. It’s also unfortunate that it appears the rest of the world is headed in this direction. Commenter Locke, in a post below, noted it only costs about $500 to install a charger in your garage. Not a substantial cost. But the… Read more »
Pritzker wants 1 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030, this is not feasible, 1. Who can afford a electric vehicle 2. Does anyone realize the cost of a charging station 3. Does anybody realize how expensive it is to charge a electric vehicle 4. Pritzker’s vision is nothing but a blur do you really think solar panels and wind power will keep up with demand, NO. GM just recalled all Chevy Volts to the tune of 141,000 vehicles because of battery fires. Hybrid gas electric vehicles that recharge themselves is more feasible. Pritzker is lost in his own… Read more »
2. Charging station = $500 100ft 6AWG Copper x4 = $290 100ft 1in conduit = $28 Various fittings, boxes, 60A fuse and drywall ~ $45 Federal rebate (30%) topline deduction, nonrefundable. Actually a straightforward DIY project if capable and comfortable around wiring. 3. $30 for 5600mi On points 1 and 4, yes, Pritzker and IL administration are idiots. Solar and wind are a pipe dream. Nuclear for main draw needs to be retained, greenies can take a long walk off a short pier. And GM has sucked since the 70s, the Bolt is just their latest / greatest entry at… Read more »
More background, be sure the fuse box has room for 60A.
If not, have to upgrade the fuse box.
A typical fuse is 15A – 20A.
The Village probably requires a permit.
Agreed, modern fuse box, 200A service and Bi-pole breaker.
Permit based on village or incorporation rules.
If you want a new car in Chicago just head down to River North and pick out any car you want. You don’t have to pay a dime, and don’t worry, there are never any consequences! Lil Kim will take good care of you.
“CORRECTION: A previous version of this story did not include additional information that we received from Gov. Pritzker’s Office that there’s a plan to introduce a trailer bill in the future that will make the rebate available statewide.”
“Illinois Senate Democrats argue that the eligible counties and townships pay into a state account that funds the rebate, which is why their residents are eligible for the rebate.”
What state account?
What source of revenue?
Regular folks should take a wait and see approach with EV even with a ‘rebate’ from state taxpayers – EV’s are a novelty item currently and are not meant for primetime usage.
Proving once again that you have to pay people to own one of these turkeys. Good luck trying to get away for a weekend trip 300 miles away while running the AC or heater. White knuckled down the highway as you watch your battery life disappear with no clue of where to charge it up.
FWIW.
There is a Tesla model with a 400 mile range, and subtract from that any a/c or heater draw.
The heater draw is much larger than the a/c draw.
I drove from Naperville to Grand Rapids MI, 2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range. Charged 100% here, arrived 18% there. Ambient outside temp ~95F to 102F, 1 stop at Covert MI for washroom break, and the Y has a glass roof. Family of 4 with dog in back, AC on all the way at ~65F. Also, stuck in the stop go traffic that is the IL / IN section of I294. Charged up quickly there, ~25min to 80% while getting a meal at Firehouse Subs. Tolls cost more than the energy used, roundtrip. Have done 5600mi since Mar 2021, total… Read more »
How would you manage a 900 mi trip, in winter time, with 150 mi of mountains?
I’d rent a big block V8 with tire chains and AWD.
Plus, no mountains here.
No 1 right answer, different solutions for different problem sets.
I get this, politico types, nah ..
But honestly, i’d just fly in and rent there.
My family and I typically drive to NC and GA. Nothing political, just real world expectations.
Understood, we fly into SEATAC and drive up to Whistler, BC in winter. Car sits in our parking space once we get to our place, and can get cold there sometimes. Would rather have gas in that case than electric. Plus BC requires chains or tire points to go north of Vancouver. Driving from here all the way there, in winter, whole lot of nope. I was really anti-Tesla as green-washed nonsense until the lockdowns, when Musk showed that he was really based on right to work, and producing vs. just taking Fed fiat. Figured would give it a try,… Read more »
Appears to be a manageable trip if multiple days (see attachment)
Intra mountain charges being the longest owing to elevation change work needed from the motors.
