Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. My perception is that chicago has gone beyond the breaking point. The city is horribly broken and lawless. The current mayor is so inept that she not only has lost control, but didn’t realize that she was never even close to having control in the beginning. The city is spiraling down to a total disaster that will make Detroit look like a model city. It will take at least a couple of decades for a new mayor to clean up the mess.
It’s more than just an invitation; they have rolled out the red carpet.
