Crowded trains tend to be safer trains. More witnesses. The CTA lost 70% of the commuters but kept 100% of the vagrants.

That’s against the law. No CCW on Chicago public transportation. The CTA is safe, ask Lori or Kimm or Tim or Toni or Dart. Just sayin’

And yet the titular head of CTA gets enormous salary, $300,000+, as reward for 2021 performance, despite steep CTA ridership drop, despite true safety concerns for remaining CTA riders compelled to remain CTA customers, despite filthy and decrepit CTA equipment and stations. Hmm, banana republic conditions here.

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
