Black neighborhoods in Chicago have water debt 10 times higher than white areas – WBEZ (Chicago)

The report — “City of Chicago Water Affordability Analysis” — authored by Elevate and the Metropolitan Planning Council outlines how water has become unaffordable for Chicago’s poorest residents. In 2015, non-metered single family customers paid, on average, $200 more per year than metered customers. By 2019, non-metered customers were paying, on average, $500 more annually than metered customers.

They don’t need to pay their Bills because the Democrats say there is racism and reparations are needed from 150 years ago.

So is the report saying that Blacks as a race, are less likely to pay their bills? If not why was race interjected into a simple matter of pay your bills or move to somewhere that you can afford to live?

Because just like Islam believes all events in life happen solely because of Allah’s will, the progressive believes that all events in life are the result of system racism. No proof or evidence is needed, just the belief that it is true, and that makes it so. Even if there is a cultural, rather than racial pattern behind a poor credit, the reason for that cultural more arises only as a result of systemic racism. There can not be any other explanation and to believe otherwise makes the non-believer an infidel aka racist deplorable.

James – again another emotional response. If the facts regarding debt and racial groups are accurate, then there is a problem with the water business in Chicago. One could perhaps opine that people don’t pay their bills and find water bills somehow easy to ignore (perhaps they know water may not be shut off), but there is a real problem with the business model if that many people are delinquent. And Chicago is the last place one would think there would be such a problem. Of all the major cities in the country, Chicago has an enviable source of fresh… Read more »

If Chicago was full of poor white people they wouldn’t be paying their water bills either. Poor people generally don’t pay their bills on time because they don’t have enough money between paychecks to pay their bills as they come due. That’s the cultural aspect, the poor person, paycheck to paycheck aspect of this. Water bills are ignored because delay between late payment and enforcement often takes years, unlike rent, or car payments, which enforcement is often quick. Water in Chicago is expensive – the blame goes everywhere, from old pipes that need replacement, to legacy workers drawing lavish pensions,… Read more »

Water is free, it falls from the sky all months of the year, a homeowner just has to collect it with a cistern on their roof or in their yard. Stop complaining about water!

This is facinating, I did not know this, thank you for these links. Interesting in IL the plumbers unions got involved and there is a plumbing code for it. Maybe it’s time our eco-friendly progressive government lets people collect their own rainwater again?
