Reilly settles for watered-down crackdown on pedicabs – Chicago Sun-Times*

Six months ago, Ald. Brendan Reilly proposed banning pedicabs altogether from the River North entertainment district after 6 p.m. and prohibiting pedicabs from using amplified sound during all hours of the day and night. On Wednesday, Reilly settled for allowing pedicabs to play music between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. daily — but only so long as the pedicab playing that music is “in the act of transporting passengers.”

If a bad idea has even a remote chance of contributing to city coffers, Lori wants to try it! Where I live we don’t have pedicabs. Are these mandatory for getting to a pedicure. All government is good for is promoting bad ideas. Can they use Lake Shore Drive or whatever it’s called this month?

Any other sane city would have banned these right away. But in Chicago, it’s equity to destroy the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of rich yuppies so a handful of pedicab operators can play loud music. Is the pedicab lobbying effort really so powerful? They’re more powerful than the taxi industry? I can only imagine the negotiations with south and west side alderman on the committee, “These yuppies complaining about loud music? They’re lucky it’s not gun shots all hours of the night. Crook madigan protege Reilly was probably taken care of by the pedicabs and Lori will let them do anything as they are black and brown victims of systemic racism.
