Like many Chicagoans, downtown business leaders were worried about potential unrest in late summer 2020 after the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wis. Unlike most Chicagoans, they had access to real-time updates directly from city officials on an invitation-only Slack channel for office building owners and managers, retailers, condo associations and others in the central business district. This exclusive communications pipeline—the existence of which hasn’t been reported previously—provided information on planned protests, crowd movements, police tactics and other developments that wasn’t available to the general public.
Here’s an early warning system for you. Look out the front windows or door of your business. If an SUV stops in the street and more that one person with a hoodie gets out, you know that there is going to be a smash and grtab shopping spree nearby.

Lori is in a quagmire of her own making. She’s trying to worm her way out of it by allowing select victims to watch a live action dog and pony show featuring stars from relevant departments. Probably includes public service announcements on extinguishing dumpster fires. Catchy slogans like run from the gun!

Early warning doesn’t help if there is no deterrent. There were few arrests, few prosecutions, and practically zero punishment.

I’m guessing the one thing business owners would appreciate more than being included on an invitation only Slack channel is not having city-sponsored violence in the loop.
I see nothing wrong with this. I kind of wish Lori would have gone full Hizzonor on these criminals, bashing heads, breaking arms and mass arrests with punitive punishments. The mostly peaceful protests were just a cover, a ruse, a false front, for the violence and looting. The goal was destruction, not protest.
Contrast this with the completely peaceful Trucker convoy in Canada.
Its unfortunate that violent and destructive protests are supported, and encouraged by the government, but peaceful protests for freedom are the subject of violent crackdowns.
This is a huge story. The big problem for Lori is the woke/ blm mob are going to go after her as a racist (a black-gay-women racist that is!!) because this is a secret deal for downtown only. That nobody would want to admit is to monitor black kids, that’s the subtext. Whether you agree with the tactics or not, this could seal the fate for lightweight…watch Gates pounce
Also, this story got me thinking about all the other tech tools law enforcement has at its disposal to fight crime and I remember CPD had to cancel it facial recognition back in May-2021 in part because of woke outrage but mostly because of Illinois Bio-Metrics Laws, which are a gigantic $money$ making cow for the Illinois legal industry (sadly as lawsuits are Illinois #1 industry!!). But then its OK for state troopers to camera read licence plates on expressway to catch the expressway shooters? How many Chicagoan’s from southside to northside would welcome back cops being able to use… Read more »
I’m a supporter of all of this: stop and frisk, facial recognition. The problems arise when it is used sloppily and half-a$$ed by lazy cops and they end up arresting the wrong people, or worst, the power of the state in anarcho-tyranny ends up being used against you.
Remember, we’re all for the thin blue line until they start arresting and beating you for not wearing a mask, or entering a business without a vax card. Look at what the police are doing in Canada right now. Otherwise good police enjoying the beatdown on otherwise peaceful law abiding protestors.
Though I usually agree with you wholeheartedly, vilifying cops crosses a line. Cops on the street are expected to follow orders – much like the military. Orders come from above – that’s where the real problems are.
“I was just following orders” is not a defense. That was established decades ago at the Nuremberg trials. Cops have few friends left, and they’ll have even fewer if they continue enforcing covid restrictions. You saw what happened in Canada these past few weeks.
The term is wildlings, which encompasses youths of all races. It’s mostly black youths but during some events like the mexican independence or puerto rican parade, or during some winning sporting event on the northside, its other races too.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
