Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Joe Biden had other priorities and frankly, would be challenged to focus on a single thing. He was too busy trying to placate AOC and little Greta Thunberg to focus on Russia. He should have stopped this before it happened with the tools at his disposal. Sanctions after the fact didn’t work. The US is a superpower with a weak leader. That invites trouble.
