‘’These individuals didn’t win a prize,” said Claire McFarland Barber, another member of the city’s Reparations Committee, addressing the council after the ceremony. ‘They didn’t get a gift. Evanston instead began the journey of a long overdue redress for these past wrongs. This distribution that we were celebrating was not in any way complete repair for the harm that they suffered, the family suffered, or the wider community suffered. Instead, we were saying it was the beginning of saying ‘Thank you’ to them for participating in this process.”
Reparations is a really clumsy and imprecise way to compensate for wrongs committed up to the 1960s. You don’t have to go back to slavery; inability to get mortgages can have generational effects. Just look into the Contract Buyers’ League.
I don’t think two wrongs make a right, but I wonder if the folks who were wronged disagree.

My family came to this country in the early nineteen hundreds…. They didn’t speak English…. They took whatever jobs they could as they worked to ASSIMILATE into their new home/life/culture. Please explain why the 3rd generation removed from this practice deserves “reparations”? Public education, subsidized housing, food programs…. When will it end? When will people take the “pursuit of happiness” as different than the guarantee of happiness. Why do these officials seek to steal the agency of their citizens? It’s no different than feeding wild animals – they learn to become dependent on the source of food and lose their… Read more »
Liberal policy is not about their impact. It’s about how it makes liberals feel, which is virtuous and good. It’s also a signal to everyone else that they have moral standing above yours, which gives them social power, in their minds, at least.
Some would argue that is an oversimplification, but when it comes down to it, I have a hard time seeing otherwise.
Indirect voter approval would be if the board members voting in favor of measure also campaigned on the issue.
Direct voter approval would be if there was a reparations referendum that was passed by voters.

Money is fungible. $400K in housing assistance and mortgage relief for reparations is $400K that can’t be spent on social workers/TA/senior nurses serving the same population. All these people saying we need more tax dollars for services, yet here we have a program that gives money directly to people, bypassing the alleged must-need govt services.

Yes. That’s why it’s not enough to just give away money. They also hold a dinner to “honor” the recipients.
All from Evanston’s elected officials, so voter approved.
