Cook County to sell $176 million of unpaid tax debt – The RealDeal

“If more people are on the tax sale rolls; if more people pay more money, the other people who already live in houses would be paying less,” treasurer Maria Pappas said. “So this is a question of economic development.”

Why does no one address the late fees of 1.5% per month or 18% per year for late property taxes. This is approaching the rates of late payments for credit cards. Why are the late payments so high when we have had a near zero interest rate environment for years now? If a person can’t pay their normal excessive taxes how will they be able to pay late fees? This is why household income should be factored into the equation not just the value of property which is ONLY an ATM machine for taxing bodies and the ability to pay… Read more »

What did all the covid “free stuff” equity $handouts$ do for the 37,000 mostly poor folks of color who cant pay their prop taxes or are walking away from their homes? Where’s Toni and the fake progressive crew touting what a great job they’re doing?

Where are James and Pensions Paid First to explain how these property owners understood they were agreeing to pay the property tax when they bought the house?

You don’t have to explicily agree with the political climate in IL, but by living here you are implicitly expected to comply with the laws passed and signed by its politicians. That’s essentially our argument.

James, good answer. Good you comment on WP. The question I always pose public sector folks who also claim to be liberals/ or progressives is— if you are the recipient of a Illinois public sector zero risk upper income salary and unheard of guaranteed not to diminished benefits leveraged on the backs of taxpayers who for the most part have far less, to the point where they’re walking away from their homes, can you still claim to be a progressive?, a liberal?, or even a democrat? What is reasonable? The last guy who knocked on my door a couple of… Read more »

I woulda told a progressive to get F off my property before I physically throw her off because progressives are scum of the earth. Rattle her mood, demoralize her for the rest of the day, tell them that we’re going to destroy them because they are evil.

If property owners didn’t understand what they were agreeing to and how property taxes work then that’s on them.

I didn’t know I had to pay property taxes to keep my house. I didn’t know I needed to pay my electric bill or I would be without power. Next thing you know the bank will take my car when I don’t make payments. What’s this world coming to?

I appreciate that both you and James responded. $176 million in unpaid property taxes for 2020 comes on top of $167 million for 2019. Stop paying mortgage, utilities and auto payments and at the end of the year you’ll be without a car.Only the private sector with a profit motive acts quickly to collect what is owed. It is very difficult to evict or shut off utilities in Cook County. What this world has come to is directly attributable to the lack of any training, academic or ethical, happening in the Chicago Public Schools.
