Editorial: Did legalizing weed sanction raising demand? Either way, that’s the Midwest reality. – Chicago Tribune*

When Michigan and Illinois decided to legalize recreational cannabis use, the debate mostly centered not on what might happen to demand but on the benefits of decriminalization and new tax revenues. A new study supported by the National Institutes for Health has found that marijuana and hallucinogen use among young adults reached an all-time high last year. There is the distinct matter of whether this new industry should be allowed to be so successful as to dominate the vistas of the interstates and spark the kind of increase in demand for its products the NIH-supported study revealed. If alcohol use were rising at this level, there would be legitimate public health concerns. Cannabis should not be exempt from the same conversations.

Yep, “2nd hand smoke” was a ruse to impose the anti tobacco smoking agenda. There wasn’t much of a pushback because smokers are scum anyway — kind of like white hetro males now. Tobacco taxes also give the government plenty of money to lavish on who knows what. Here’s a trivia question. When’s the last time you heard a PSA on smoking or were told where you could get help to quit a la Brooke Shields? It’s why cigarettes cost $10 a pack and was less than a dollar when I was a kid. It was one more step on… Read more »

When I mention this, I typically get down votes. But pot, particularly in the higher THC concentrations, can cause significant problems in young people. The science is advancing, and while there are those who think pot use acceptable in young people, there is a growing body of evidence that pot can cause significant harm, including psychoses. There is a group called Johnny’s Ambassador’s, which does great work in explicating the dangers of pot in young people, especially the high THC variety freely available today. The founder lost a son to cannabis induced psychoses. The kid – bright – with a… Read more »

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
