Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. I don’t know if Pekau can defeat Casten, but I sure hope so. Casten represents everything wrong with this country. He must be nervous though, as he’s working hard to hold onto that seat. His pandering has reached new levels. I expect to see him dressed in drag and claiming he got an abortion in his next ad.
The AWFLs in the suburbs will decide this race. I was at a party a few weeks ago with half a dozen AWFLs and within the 10 minutes of everyone arriving, the women couldn’t help themselves but go into anti-Trump, non-binary that, Trumpsters this, transphobes that. These are 30’s, 40’s suburban women, own homes, have two or three kids. These are people I’ve known for 20 years or more but no longer see as often.
