"I’m a life-long rail addict, but I’ve had my own uncomfortable experiences of late. On one recent ride, I cowered in the corner as a group of young men stormed through brandishing broken bottles. A few days ago, I struggled to find a seat in cars filled with the sleeping forms of the unhoused, sheltering from the cold. Changing trains later that day, I waited half an hour for a 'ghost train' — one that shows up on the station’s transit monitor, but never arrives."

Mass transit won’t come back until it is safe for riders. Most people will not risk their lives, if they have any choice at all, to be on the same conveyance as the gang bangers, whacked out druggies and the criminally mentally insane. That safety solution is highly unlikely as long as Chiraq keeps electing progressive, pro criminal mayors and states attorneys.

The Chitty of Chicago doing its best. DOA, people are not safe, and the poor honest taxpayer is being screwed over in every which way. Families have almost no other choice than to leave the area. A real shame for once was a great City, not a Schmitt hole. Highest taxes, Highest crime and poorest education. Government employees paid huge money, great benefits and HUGE PENSIONS for zero performance. No money for anything but pensions, it has squeezed out everything else and going to get worse, much worse. Vote with your feet if you do not like it, hundreds of thousands… Read more »
Commuting on the old Chicago and North Western line in the 80’s was one of the best commuting experiences in the US. Trains were clean, performance was on time, and reading or getting work done was a pleasure (if that is what one wanted). The only negative was the smoking cars and if the non-smoking cars were full it was unpleasant (and with a sure trip to the dry cleaners thereafter). When I commuted to Grand Central in NY a few years later, I though that Chicago’s rail system was a huge advantage. New York trains were often dirty, often… Read more »
You should specifically mention no health care premiums. That’s a biggie, of course, that the IL taxpayer gets to pay for, too. What an incredible abuse of the IL taxpayer!
A group of young men? You might be a bit more specific coward. Why use code? It goes without saying what the makeup of this group is.
