Marriage, Then Mortgage Much of the racial gap in homeownership is tied to rates of family formation – City Journal

Not long ago, the importance of marriage and family to basic economic advancement was a legitimate part of policy discussion, even on the political left. In 2008, then–presidential candidate Barack Obama delivered a Father’s Day speech in a Chicago church emphasizing the link between the family and economic success: “Of all the rocks upon which we build our lives, we are reminded today that family is the most important,” he said. “Yes, we need more jobs and more job training and more opportunity in our communities. But we also need families to raise our children.”

The woke have maintained for some time that the nuclear family, because of being devised by white people of previous generations, is therefore not a good concept and is not for them. We’re still waiting for the woke to propose a better solution.

Will the great Thomas Sowell ever get the recognition he deserves? He predicted years ago exactly where progressive ideas would lead. Read Vision of the Anointed, published 1997. It perfectly describes everything we see today. Thomas Sowell is a national treasure.

Probably never, thanks to the leftist suppression of anybody who contradicts them. Same with so many good, black thinkers who go ignored, collected here:https://freeblackthought.com

I would add Walter Williams to that mix – smart savvy economist. Always enjoyed his fresh perspective.

We miss you Walter!

When Obama said that, Jesse Jackson wanted to cut off his nuts for saying it; his words not mine.

Here’s my proposal;

1) Graduate from school
2) Get a job
3) Get married
4) Save up to buy a house
5) Have your first child

If this ever becomes part of the Democratic Party platform I’ll cry tears of joy.

Your proposal is steeped in Whiteness. Systemically racist structures are baked into your proposal. Why should ‘education’ be important? Traditional education is steeped in ideas of whiteness and fail to advance the case of minorities. Why is getting a job important? Working is difficult, and traumatic, and the community should be there to provide for its members. Why is getting married important? Monogamy and commitment is steeped in western values because other cultures are polygamous and open. Saving up to buy a house? Housing is a human right, why should anyone save for a house, when the government should be… Read more »

The solution is to completely reorder society to punish people who graduate, work, save and have children in wedlock. Those values are racist privileges that need to be dismantled, so that everyone else can succeed in society without having to abide by seemingly arbitrary rules, like marriage, or graduation. The less privileged folk deserve every thing privileged folk and they shouldn’t have to live your lifestyle to achieve it.

Well Riverbender, I lived in my parents basement for 5 years to save money for the down payment on a house. On the bright side, I moved directly from their basement to my 1st house. Didn’t Pass Go. I did pay room and board while living there after graduating from Michigan State.

Yep, I’m old school….

Economies of scale. Two incomes paying one mortgage/rent payment. Even if the space is bigger, you’re not paying for double the common areas and appliances. It’s why most people who just graduated college have roommates for years until they become more established in their careers.

If anything, co-habitation is environmentally-friendly. I wonder what Sierra Club thinks about it?

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
