Call Crime by Its Name – National Review*

"In the face of all this, the rhetoric of Chicago’s incoming mayor — and of its new ultra-progressive city council, its media outlets, and its activists — bespeaks an entire ruling class that has simply given up on the city and on the idea of its being anything but a broken sandbox to test academic ideas in. If you cannot call crime by its name, identify antisocial behavior for what it is, and hold those who engage in it properly accountable, then that’s the ball game for urban cohesion."

Progressives never pass up an opportunity to have a few jerks ruin things for everyone else.

You are assuming a fair and honest election.
Do you really think the people of Illinois voted in JB?
Do you really believe Chicagoans voted out Lori for someone even worse like Brandon?
I think not, these politicians were selected.

This is completely and entirely the product of the Chicago Teachers Union. Bust this verminous terrorist organization now.

Wrong. Blame belongs on the voters, and those who don’t bother to vote.

So you’re blaming teachers when even the Chicago Police with the ability to arrest and detain can’t control this same group of teenagers. If it’s so easy go downtown and teach these kids the lesson they need. I’m sure they will listen to you and respect your authority.

These sanctioned mob-goes-wild episodes are apparently considered as “preformative restitution for POC youth”, somehow justfiable and even championed by some POC politicians. Read their statements. Clearly spoken dog-whistling, without further sharp rebuke from other politicians. And crickets from our supposed “community leaders”, too woke, or too cowed, to respond responsibly, nor to act to implement measures to prevent more mayhem downtown. City Hall needs to realize that Chicago’s tourism industry, and its downtown business district, are sharply declining. Outside of Chicago, outside of Illinois, outside of USA, people know that Chicago has become a dangerous place to visit, lawless and… Read more »

I’ve been trying for a couple of days to get my head around the logic of arguing that teens wouldn’t riot in city parks, and try to ransack museums and assault tourists on public streets, if they had been provided with safe places for them to behave.

If parks and art museums and restaurants and shops aren’t safe places for teens to behave if they way to, I’m not sure what Johnson et al are after.

It’s called ethno-narcissism, where Johnson et al believe that the member of their racial group can do no wrong, overshadows all other important values. They don’t share our important values that streeterville pointed out above, like acting like good-citizens, behaving in public, self-control. They see their behavior as a weapon to fight back against the systemically racist societal structures. And the politicians use these kids as a weapon too. “Give us what we want for our voters or the kids will keep coming and terrorizing your neighborhoods and communities”. Because ultimately, they don’t see themselves as part of society, they… Read more »

If you google Charles Barkley’s crabs in a barrel comment it’s further explains why blacks aren’t speaking out against this behavior.

This is what the CPS has taught a whole generation. No job skills, no business to work at, this is the perfect storm.

Sorry, ya missed it – they have no self-respect because they aren’t respectful. Think South Africa.

My only question is, will this be happening all summer in the city, these flash mob wilding incidents, and if so, when the city officials and Mayor hand in their resignation papers for not being able to control their own city, and killing our businesses(which will flee if possible), and tourism, and the simply joy of enjoying our own downtown

Are you kidding – this is the “paradise” that the libs *want*… total
chaos, anarchy, and a societal breakdown… Portland, Seattle, and Frisco are already there, and no one there is effectively “pushing back” against the destructive lib policies. I even see this trend here in Evanston…

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
