It’s early days for Chicago’s new top cop Larry Snelling and we don’t know much about him, but it was hard to ignore what he said – and what he didn’t – in his introduction as the city’s new superintendent.
Absent was the typical victimization message that Chicago leadership promotes over and over again.
Instead, Snelling – from Englewood and a product of the Chicago Public Schools – offered a message of inspiration to the many Chicagoans that face major life challenges. He emphasized that success is possible with “hard work, dedication and continuous education.”
Skeptics in social media say that he’ll have to backtrack – that there’s no way that type of message can stand in a Mayor Johnson administration. We’ll see.
But in the meantime, kudos to Snelling for standing behind the values of merit, competence and achievement.

A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
Come on…really…This guy has no hope of impacting crime in Chicago. He’s just another one in a long line of Chief appointees. He’s here to collect what he can get and hand out what he can to his pals for a couple of years till the jig is up. Then cash out on a top tier retirement and pay grade and play golf. End of story…enter the next appointee.
Normally he would have a honeymoon period but all eyes are watching. I want him to succeed but the clock is ticking and what he does this Labor Day weekend will be important. Fighting Crimesha Foxx and Evans is going to be a rude awakening. Desantis has it right when he removes these States Attorney’s who refuse to protect the public and instead protect criminals. It’s not impossible but it’s so lopsided that it’s going to be hard to prevent this ship from sinking. He seems to be yet another yes man. BJ can’t afford to have someone change his… Read more »
Geez– he actually might be thinking that the criminals are bad guys instead of just bored scholars? We’ll see what happens when the next mob action explodes or the next luxury store gets looted. Will it be the same old/same old or somebody actually gets arrested and prosecuted.
Does anyone know his pay and benefits package.
At what age can he retire and approximately what will his pension be in $$$ be?
Bet the retirement age is younger than SS 67 years old and the amount is far higher than the Maximum SS payout that a normal private sector worker gets.
It would be interesting to see what kind of money is paid to the top man as the Chitty is run by criminals going wild.
Good work if you can get it.
Will he give an interview to Wirepoints? This would be amazing.
Realistically what he says sounds good but consider that the DA, Kim Foxx, is not going to prosecute and the Mayor ran on the promise of being soft on crime. It is all hopeful hoopla unless the Mayor and DA get on board and that apparently is not what the voters want. Stay tuned for just more of the same as Chicago sinks even lower into the depths of criminal activity.
“ And the band plays on..” Ball of Confusion, The Temptations.
His CPD career-history consists of fast-tracked “merit” (affirmative action) promotions, though little street cop experience of note, promoted actual managerial capabilities.
Don’t expect more effective policing policies from new Chief, likely just another department-head puppet, espousing “woke” party-line: “not criminals, just disenfranchised folks victimized by disinvestment, urgently needing food for their babies”, carjacking, mugging, and stealing are not “criminal” acts.”
As noted on revived Second City Cop blog site, CPD promotions are now simply “merit” brass promoting new “merit” disciples, with no attention given to competence, test scores, and managerial ability.
That “message of inspiration” won’t mean JACK once the mayor tells him what he can and can’t do. The more things change the more they stay the same. Sorry, but I’m not hopeful.
How long will Chief Snelling last? He’s off the plantation that Pritzker and Democrats have cultivated for decades.
Well, you’re certainly correct in observing that BJ hasn’t ever, and likely won’t ever, say such things.
Which leads me to wonder whether BJ and his posse knew what Snelling intended to say before his press conference.
Excellent comment! I worked for 5 different bosses in a job where I gave group presentations regarding investment and tax law and only one of them pre-screened my comments. He was the best boss I ever had!
Well said. He seems to have common sense. I hope others will listen to his message, which you don’t hear often in this city anymore as the CPS / CTU seem hell bent on churning out teen grievance machines.
