Hinz , Brandon, jb, etc are callling for expediting work permits for migrants who hinz terms as “refugees”. How is a ” refugee” defined vrs all the other millions of undocumented immigrants in Illinois who have been here forever?
Hinz makes a good point– so long as he is talking about immigrants who are here LEGALLY. Unfortunately, that is not the overwhelming majority of folks he is talking about, especially in the food and hospitality industries. We all want to support good people who followed the rules and are here to work, and we need their labor and their contribution to the city. But how to differentiate between the two groups is the problem. Immigrants represent another number when it comes to voting apportionment that Crain’s seems to ignore. Yes, in the past, immigrants did build Chicago; however, today many simply join up in the free stuff army causing financial burdens to an already overburdened population of taxpayers. Times have certainly charged and Crain’s, despite many views to the contrary, still beats the drums of the liberal manta that it always seems to do so well.
They keep saying “nation of immigrants” but the children of immigrants become natives, and even at the height of immigration in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, no more than 13% of the country was foreign born. Right now Chicago is 18% immigrant, so we have more immigrants today than any time in history. And moreover, one thing conveniently overlooked by Hinz, is that the immigrants of the past BUILT their communities.
