Is it unreasonable to ask why the only apparent benefit of this “immigration” to the average citizen is the emotional comfort from being so welcoming?

Absolutely spot on. Criminal Illegal Alien is the correct legal phrase. But if you avod this unpleasant phrase and use a different purposely inaccurate word, then the legal and illegal become blurred. And War becomes Peace, Ignorance becomes slavery and 2+2 = 5.
