Students supporting Palestinian rights say they lost out on jobs, were targeted online for their activism – Chicago Sun-Times

“It pains me,” said a student who asked not to be named. “I wish we didn’t live in a world where we look at your Instagram bio and see a flag and decide that means something...It’s hard to prove racism. But in these cases it seems like the skew is there.” He recently swapped the Palestinian flag in his Instagram bio, representing his heritage, to a watermelon emoji, a more discreet symbol of Palestinian solidarity.

Agree that students should keep their politics to themselves when applying for a job – however I do not agree with the targeting of students who are standing up for Palestine, but students who stand up for BLM, LGBTQ or Israel are not being targeted. I have not read that Students who stand for DEI, ESG, LGBTQ, or Israel are being targeted by employers. We do have a 1st amendment freedom of speech in this Country and we are going down a very bad path if we start picking and choosing who you can or cannot stand up for or… Read more »

Your enemies have no principles and neither should you, unless you want to lose badly. A democrat leaning employer would fire you in an instant if they knew you supported Trump. You should rejoice when your enemies are held to their own standard.

The Constitution is what it is and if we lose the 1st amendment (which we already are) because… Read more »

Actions have consequences. Might as well learn it while you’re young. If you don’t like it, start your own company. Otherwise, keep your politics to yourself. Nobody wants to hear your voice.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
