Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Chanting death to America is treasonous speech. Chanting death to Israel is hate speech. Not protected by 1st amendment. Blocking roadways is a danger to the public and prevents emergency vehicles from aiding the public. Arrest and throw them in jail.
Hate speech is not illegal. As horrible as these protesters are, saying hateful things is protected by the first amendment. People should be arrested for blocking roadways. People should be tried for treason if they are committing treason. No one should be arrested because some person views your words as “hateful”. Who determines hateful speech? Would you be comfortable with the Biden administration (or any administration) making that determination? Very scary to even think about. Deal with the hateful words (or any words that make you uncomfortable) knowing that it’s the price to pay for our first amendment rights. Don’t… Read more »
Wow. A second thing that we agree on PPF. Truly there is hope for the Republic. There is no such thing as “Hate Speech”. There is speech that you may personally hate but the speaker is free to say whatever they want. There’s a reason that the Freedom of Speech is the FIRST amendment.
Absolutely agree. That doesn’t mean, however, that we ignore what is said. It is a warning that we have a problem brewing in our midst that must be dealt with. Arresting people for hate speech does not solve the problem. We need more speech that clearly exposes these people for what they are.
Hate speech is legal in theory only. Hate speech in practice is absolutely banned, they call it a hate crime. Go ahead an try espousing hate speech in Cook County and you’ll find yourself locked up in jail on various other trumped up charges. Several years back some clearly insane jerk in a forest preserve said some nasty ‘hate speech’ stuff and he went to jail for quite some time.

It’s true that hate crimes charges are often abused, but hate speech is protected. It’s different if it’s accompanied by physical threats, which appear to be the case in your example.
In America its not illegal to express hate with speech. Just watch MSNBC for proof of that. In Canada however you could be thrown in jail for the slightest mention that men cannot be women. But thats not us…. yet.
Exactly.
Deb, you are wrong. Pensions Paid First has it exactly right below. False belief that hate speech is not protected is dangerous.

Take a lead from Florida … drag protesters to the curb and clear the roadway. Let citizens go about their lives without dealing with these misguided fools.
This IS domestic terrorism – shutting down major roadways.
They shouldn’t have arrested them. They should have run them over. That’s a much better deterrent.
