Illinois pharmacists, State Medical Society split over new test and treat practice – WAND (Decatur)

State lawmakers approved a plan this spring expanding the number of ailments pharmacists can test and treat, including the flu, COVID-19, strep throat, lice and RSV.

The Medical Society raises some valid points–will the pharmacies have the capacity to create and maintain medical records? As a patient, do you want your medical data available in so many different locations, each of which is subject to potential abuse? Will the pharmacy communicate with primary care doctors about the episode of care? Will the provision of these additional services increase pharmacy wait time for other sick people? If their specific medical knowledge is limited to just the named “test and dispense” conditions, they cannot possibly address an individual patient’s complex medical needs. Pharmacists do not have the time to do a diagnosis of any of those diseases. The druggist does know about meds and interaction between them. I would not feel
Safe asking a pharmacist to do a differential
Diagnosis for my symptoms. The liability for
The pharmacist and store will be steep.
