“The only goal is not about profitability. The goal is to provide a sustainable solution to food inequity," said S. Mayumi “Umi” Grigsby, the mayor’s policy chief. A 10,000-square-foot store built by the city for a private operator would have cost $8.1 million up-front, with $2.7 million of that coming from the city. Net operating income would be $45,000 with an assumed profit margin of 0.9%. It would require a $110,000 annual subsidy.
So after a few month’s I’m guessing that this store will be just like the ones in the USSR: Long lines. Empty shelves. Only a handful of not very popular items actually for sale. Tins of anchovies. Bags of chickpea flour. Cans of Pureed beets. And lots of Quinoa. Quinoa breakfast cereal. Chocolate with Quinoa. Quinoa “Chicken”. Quinoa granola. Quinoa. Quinoa. Quinoa. Shelves of quinoa.
The hilarious description of the stark difference between Soviet Union run state stores and farmers markets out in the rural areas as detailed by P.J. O’Roarke ( R.I.P.) in “Vacations from Hell “ will be quite familiar to us all if this socialist/ progressive boondoggle comes to realization.

The article references a “200-page report” but provides no link and in a brief search I did not find it. One hopes that the report includes interviews with managers who have tried to run groceries in what are now “food deserts,”asking why their stores closed.

I’m sure government can operate a grocery as well as it operates a post office or a school.
Theft will be encouraged. They won’t use checkout staff as they would be subject to being robbed. Everything will be on the honor system, in an area where many have no honor.

Hmm, why doesn’t an enterprising grocer of color jump on the opportunity that a food desert presents?
This hair-brained idea will be mentioned when the city fails.

The nine-year difference in life expectancy between Black and white Chicagoans — the “death gap” — is blamed at least in part on “food insecurity.” I would like to see what stats went into calculating how much or the death gap is food insecurity. My guess the good portion of the gap is the homicide rate, ad lifestyle choices. What is the greatest distance that a person has to travel to reach a real grocery store? I am not sure about the southside, but the westside distance is probably not more than two miles. With bus service not that big… Read more »
The calculation is based on population and mortality data, and can’t distinguish the behaviors that might lead to differences. Actually, getting groceries by bus can be a challenge, especially given how reliable service isn’t.
Paul, they aren’t, or at least shouldn’t be. All comments do now go through moderation first because we’ve had a couple malicious hackers using other people’s names.

Oh this is too funny even for you people in Illinois. My head spins with the dozens of different ways that a store such as this will become just one large corridor of corrupt money to democrats. It’s too easy. Why not just name it Theftmart? Corruption and stealing for everyone. The abject stupidity is mind boggling. Supine compliance will be the mindset of the day. And no one will seriously object and the media will put out the propaganda they are told to put out. And the Illinois slaves will pay for it all, while complaining about not being… Read more »

$6.2M upfront to build out an existing 10,000 sq/ft space????? That should be $150/ft for the build out, double that to $300/ft because the city is doing it, total cost $3M. Net income 30,000 with a 130,000 subsidy, that should be net income(loss) (100,000). This just tells me the city has no business getting involved with running a grocery store.

Conehead the Mayorbarian will have his people buy a bag of chips for $10 and sell it at $3, the price being free for thugs and looters.

It will be robbed blind. Huge miss use of taxpayer’s money. Let the private sector do what they want think is best. If walmart and others can not do it what makes the city think they stand a chance?

LOL
And I’m SURE no one would EVER steal from a state run grocery store.

It’s very annoying and inexcusable how routinely regular media includes no link to other sources they write about.

The difference is the endless supply of taxpayer money to offset the cost of mismanagement.
