Column: Water utility’s rate-hike proposal springs a leak – Champaign News-Gazette

"Illinois American, which has siphoned up 40 small systems in Illinois over the last 10 years, bought the operations in Villa Grove, 20 miles south of Urbana, in 2022. It soon learned that there would be costs beyond the $11 million it paid the village. ... The rate-hike request is now before the Illinois Commerce Commission, which heard oral arguments on the case Wednesday and is expected to make a ruling in early December. If it’s granted in full, which looks very unlikely, customers in Champaign-Urbana would see a more than 40 percent rate increase."
