County To Streamline Unwieldy Electronic Monitoring Programs — But Nobody Wants To Manage It – Block Club Chicago

It’s been a game of political hot potato for who controls the large and unpopular system seen as overtly restrictive for most suspects and ineffective at stopping violators who go on to make devastating headlines. Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans told the Cook County Board that consolidating the programs under his office was “not something I embrace readily.”

“Thousands of people subjected to electronic monitoring were prevented from leaving their homes to perform essential tasks such as grocery shopping, seeking medical attention, going to work, picking their kids up from school and even doing things as simple as taking out the garbage or picking up their mail,” according to the network’s statement, which added that the devices disproportionately impact the county’s Black residents.

Sounds tough, but better than being in the hoosegow. Is it too much to ask people to obey our laws?
