Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. The state’s existing buyout program for its own pensions is the precedent for Chicago, which should be a warning: Look out for similar exaggerated claims and shoddy analysis.

Johnson surely knows he has 4 years max to permanently transfer as much wealth from taxpayers to the CTU as he can. Maybe that was alway the plan. That he is having any success whatsoever is due to an insufficient number of alderman with the guts willing to oppose him and, remarkably, the number who actually support him. Pritzker should be yelling from the treetops – ok, from the stronger lower limbs – about the disasters of Johnson. This is what the Democratic Party has foisted on the city.
He’s looting the city’s coffers. That’s his job. They don’t have any civic duty, or civic pride, or any good feelings towards Chicago, which to them, is nothing more than a oppressive white supremacist system designed to incarcerate and impoverish black and brown people. They intend to loot the city until it collapses and they hope that out of the ashes a progressive utopia will be reborn. That’s really true. Alderman Scott Waugespack said as much recently. Scott is a Progressive whom I respect for honesty and integrity. He said yesterday the mayor/CTU strategy is to take out as much cash as possible now on the expectation that somebody else will later figure out a bailout.

The CTU will be around longer than you. We will continue to demand fair pay and benefits. Our union brothers just help push the social security fairness act across the finish line. My social security will be increasing $1300 per month. Sure it’s only 10% of my monthly pension but it just shows what we can accomplish when we organize and work together. You keep licking the boots of your corporate overlords and we will just keep winning. So much winning. I’ll never tire of all this winning.
Fair pay and benefits would be one thing, insane demands well outside the scope of the CPS mission are another altogether. It would be nice to see CTU collaborating with CPS on closing schools like Douglas HS with 35 students and reallocating funds much more humanely and productively rather than the militant jobs protection disguised care for “the kids”. CTU needs rational leadership not racketeers. CTU may be winning but the students and taxpayers sure aren’t.

Sorry, but the number of rank-and-file CTU members who parrot the union talking points („demand fair pay”, „when we organize and work together”, etc.) is dwindling. More and more of my colleagues are waking up, and pulling their support away, recognizing that a) CTU leadership cares nothing about them, and even less about the kids. These are admitted Marxists, with totalitarian goals. You are a pawn in their game. and b) the entire system – CPS, CTU, CTPF – is financially unsustainable.
