It’s not really wrong in that taxpayers outside Chicago subsidize Chicago in other ways. However the pensions themselves are wrong, in that taxpayers not receiving Social Security and 401K have to fund far more lucrative pension benefits they they themselves do not receive. So convert going forward defined benefit pensions to a 401K type system to make it right. That’s difficult because that may result in the ponzi scheme type (new investor funds used to pay existing investors) defined benefit pensions eventually running short of funds or cause bigger tax hikes. A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
